Football (soccer) is one of the fastest-growing junior sports on the Sunshine Coast, and it is easy to see why. With mild winters, excellent playing fields and a club network that stretches from Caloundra in the south through Maroochydore, Kawana and Mooloolaba to Noosa in the north, there is almost certainly a club within a short drive of wherever you live on the Coast.

Sunshine Coast Football is the governing body for the region, overseeing junior and senior competitions across a large number of affiliated clubs. Junior football typically runs from around April through August, giving families a well-structured winter season with regular Saturday fixtures. Age groups begin at the MiniRoos level for very young players, where the emphasis is on fun, movement and developing a love of the game rather than results. From under-eight upward, competitions become progressively more structured as players develop their skills.

Most clubs hold registration days early in the year, usually between January and March, and online registration is available through the Football Australia registration system, Play Football. Costs vary between clubs but generally include registration fees, a club shirt and access to training sessions during the week. Many clubs also offer gear hire or second-hand kit for new families.

Training typically takes place on weekday evenings at local fields, with matches scheduled on Saturday mornings. The social side of junior football is a big part of the experience: post-game oranges, end-of-season presentations and club fundraisers create a community warmth that extends well beyond the final whistle.
